The Irrelevant Elephant

Is freedom for everyone? OR is it only for those who deserve it, those who earn it? Those who can afford it? oops that last one speaks a little too true for some. I better watch myself or I will end up on the same list as Ray McGovern. Sometimes the truth hurts, but if it hurts the right people, they fight back to preserve the lie. But enough of that, and back to my main point.

I have been a member of the Republican party for many years now. That might surprise some readers, but it is true. Perhaps I am one of the most liberal republicans still alive. At one point my views wouldn’t have been so far outside the republican tent. I believe that the government should be small. Unintrusive. Minding their own business of running the country and national defence, keeping up the infrastructure and supporting businesses of all sizes. Not taking sides with big businesses or granting exclusive non-bid contracts. Not adding religion to our government. Not running the budget up to rediculous amounts and building the national debt. Wow, amazing that the Clinton administration managed the budget and actually reduced the deficit.

I suppose I would fit better as an independent or really libertarian. I stay a republican so I can have a say in the primary election. I vote for non-extremists to try to bring moderation, or occasionally I vote for the wackiest candidate thinking that if they win, the democrat will surely prevail. Is anyone in the Republican Party reading this?!? I can’t be the only frustrated-fed up-almost quitting the R party- person. The party has to get back to reality and quit with the bullshit.
oh…and honesty would be a good place to start.

I really am unhappy with the political situation in this country. The two major parties seem to be glomming onto the same political agenda, and instead of being central they are both heading to the right. Is this a fear of the religious right? Is it the desire of some portion of our country to return to “the good old days” of the fifties or somewhere in time where people “knew their place”? The good old days weren’t all that good. People forget the things they take for granted (I guess that was kind of a stupid sentence, but I will let it stand) The good old days had 4 channels of TV, no internet, expensive long distance bills, no cell phones, hangings of people who did nothing wrong but had the wrong skin color in some people’s eyes, women treated like property, need I go on?
